Undergraduate

Animation BA Honours

Course overview +

Our exciting specialist course will enable you to develop your imaginative and creative skills, while giving you a sound knowledge and understanding of animation processes, techniques and critical theory.

Commercial animation is a rapidly growing and vibrant industry, encompassing a broad range of rewarding and fascinating creative job opportunities. Our strong emphasis on creative practice will help you to develop your skills in drawing and design, along with the imaginative development and innovation of ideas expressed sequentially. These skills, together with the professional practice aspects of the course, will ensure that you have the confidence and expertise to succeed in industry, whether as a producer, technician, designer or manager. You’ll also develop the transferable and cognitive skills necessary for lifelong personal and professional development.

Throughout the course, there are opportunities for you to take part in national and international competitions and film festivals. Our course is delivered by a large team of experienced animation practitioners, staff and industry visitors, and you’ll work in dedicated specialist animation studios with facilities for blue screen, rostrum animation, CGI, drawing, stop-frame, film, photography, set building, sound and video.

Successful animators need to be flexible and able to adapt to changing cultures and new initiatives. Based at our Harrow Campus, you’ll work alongside students from film, photography, music, fashion and journalism in a unique creative environment.

Undergraduate with Foundation Year

Animation with Foundation BA Honours

Course overview +

Our degree courses with Foundation year offer the opportunity to prepare you for advanced study before you progress onto a full honours degree at the University of Westminster.

Whether you do not feel ready for degree-level study, don’t have the right qualifications, want to change your subject specialism or return to study after an absence from education, we aim to encourage a broad range of students to undertake our Foundation year.

Our foundation year in Art and Design provides an introduction to our subject areas and prepares you for your chosen discipline. You’ll develop fundamental art and design skills, explore practical disciplines, then specialise in your chosen area while preparing work for an end-of-year public exhibition.

On successful completion of the Foundation year, you will be able to move on to study for the Animation BA Honours degree over a further three years.

The specialist Animation course develops your imaginative and creative skills, alongside knowledge of animation processes, techniques and critical theory. You’ll have access to specialist facilities for blue screen, CGI, drawing, stop-frame, film, photography, set building, sound and video.

Creative Media Arts BA Honours

Course overview +

Our Creative Media Arts BA Honours is an exciting hands-on course that will see you produce art and make content including films, photographs, interactive installations, immersive and digital media using creative technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, projection mapping, 3D modelling and game engines.

With an ethos of learning through making, you will be encouraged to experiment, innovate and pursue your own creative interests. Theory and practice are integrated, with current debates around creativity in the age of generative AI, digital identities, and the relationships between media and power.

The course produces multi-skilled graduates capable of thriving in fast-moving creative industries. It prepares you for careers as an artist, director or producer within media arts and cultural sectors, as well as opportunities in marketing, content creation and creative technologies.

Alongside developing your own creative practice and portfolio, you’ll have the opportunity to exhibit and present work publicly, collaborate with others, work on productions and develop project-management and problem-solving skills.

The Art and Design foundation programme introduces key subject areas, develops practical and academic skills, and enables you to specialise in your chosen discipline in the second semester.

On successful completion of the Foundation year, you’ll be able to move on to study for the Creative Media Arts BA Honours degree over a further three years.

You’ll work across media disciplines including filmmaking, photography, interaction design, virtual and augmented reality, video and art installation, motion graphics, animation, projection mapping, creative coding, 3D modelling, sound art, audio production and web design.

Our course combines traditional art-school approaches with industry-level professionalism, supporting you to develop practical projects, critical thinking, innovation and awareness of the political, ethical and aesthetic implications of your work.

Film BA Honours

Course overview +

At Westminster we develop thinking filmmakers who have something to say to, and about, the world. This three-year degree is one of the best-known film courses in the world, with an international reputation for its academic and practical teaching.

We operate from a purpose-built facility in Harrow, with two large film and television studios, a set construction workshop and extensive post-production facilities. The campus also houses design, photography, music, fashion and animation degrees.

You’ll study film theory alongside practical work, collaborating as you learn production specialisms in writing, producing, cinematography, directing, production design, editing and sound. You’ll also receive support in self-promotion, networking and freelancing.

Our industry contacts contribute to teaching, and we remain connected with graduates who have gone on to sustained careers in film. Student films have been screened at festivals globally and won awards through organisations including the Royal Television Society and Student Academy Awards.

Film and Television Production BA Honours

Course overview +

Our Film and Television Production BA is a practice-based course taught by experienced screen professionals and media theorists, combining hands-on production skills with critical and creative insight into the global screen environment.

The course explores how screen stories are conceived, produced, commissioned and distributed across film, television and online platforms. You’ll gain experience in single-camera filmmaking, multi-camera studio production and genres including documentary, drama, factual entertainment, short film, branded content and emerging online formats.

You’ll develop practical skills in camera, lighting, sound, editing, producing and directing, while deepening your understanding of audiences, global contexts and the fast-changing screen industries.

Business of Film MA

Course overview +

This course equips students with essential knowledge and skills in the business of film, delivered with the British Film Institute as our industry partner.

It is a professional development programme for people whose ambitions include supporting, financing and marketing good films. It also supports people from accounting, law, logistics and other fields who want to enter the profession.

Delivered in the heart of London, this postgraduate course will appeal to film professionals looking to develop their knowledge, as well as those aspiring to work in the industry with backgrounds in business, finance or law.

You’ll develop knowledge of finance, legal and marketing matters, alongside communication, networking and relationship-building skills. Students take part in live industry projects, placements and marketing opportunities.

Students can access guest speakers, networking events, mentoring and placement opportunities through the BFI, as well as opportunities to work with Regent Street Cinema on real-world film distribution projects.

Film, Television and Moving Image MA

Course overview +

Our innovative Film, Television and Moving Image MA builds on its heritage as one of the longest-running degree programmes of its kind in the UK. It combines practice-based approaches and academic enquiry, with creative opportunities in screenwriting, production, and exhibition.

You’ll develop core production and critical-thinking skills and can specialise in fiction screenwriting, nonfiction filmmaking, or moving image curation and exhibition.

The course explores the synergies between mainstream, innovative and research-led creative practices, allowing you to situate your Major Project as either a dissertation or research-supported creative project.

The University has a vibrant research culture, with close links to the Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media and the Communication and Media Research Institute.
