Border Crossings’ ORIGINS Festival

From nine female Māori filmmakers come eight connected stories, each taking place at the same moment in time during the tangi (funeral) of a small boy, Waru, who has died at the hands of a caregiver.

A remarkable anthology that follows different female characters as they come to terms with Waru’s death and try to find a way forward in their community. Each is confronted by guilt, pride and defeat – but will they risk everything for the greater good of their community? Through the power of cooperative film-making, the circumstances of this tragedy are examined and the social, economic and cultural forces at play are revealed.
