Toyen
Jan Nemec Retrospective
Forging links between reality and imagination, this is a lyrical portrait of Toyen, a great Czech Surrealist who broke into the male-dominated art world. It reconstructs her life in wartime Prague, when she was hiding her Jewish lover, fellow artist Jindřich Heisler. Linking fragments and details and mixing archive footage, stylized sequences and re-enactments with natural sounds, Němec creates a collage of multi-layered images evoking the spirit of the avant-garde and a true sense of the era. A film full of visual poetry.
