Soul Jazz Records Cinema Club
Soul Jazz Records presents this rare film screening of They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970), the CLASSIC Blaxploitation film starring Sidney Poitier and a wicked soundtrack by Quincy Jones.
Call Me Mister Tibbs is a superlative black action thriller made in 1970 and starring Sidney Poitier reprising his role as Virgil Tibbs from the earlier groundbreaking film In The Heat of the Night. With all the ingredients of the best Blaxploitation movies of the early 1970s – including an unbelievably funky soundtrack from Quincy Jones – Call Me Mister Tibbs towers above the genre through the powerful performance of Sidney Poitier, at the time the highest paid and most prominent African-American actor working in Hollywood. Poitier’s character distills all the righteous anger and self-respect of the civil rights movement into his character, a black police officer working with the San Franciso police to track down the murder of a prostitute.
The film will be introduced by Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) and Soul Jazz Records DJs will also be playing heavy funk and soul tunes in the bar before and after the film.
