Followed by a Q&A with Jon Savage
Grant Gee’s 2007 Joy Division is the definitive documentary about the Manchester band. Written by Jon Savage (England’s Dreaming, Teenage, 1966) and featuring candid interviews with Bernard Sumner, Tony Wilson, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris it captures perfectly the era and the city that gave birth to one of the UK’s most important post punk groups.
Impressionistic, inventive and artful Joy Division mixes a series of outstanding interviews with period footage, archive material and photographs to tell a story that is as much about the times (late ’70s Britain) as it is about the band themselves. With additional contributions from Factory records graphic artist Peter Saville, photographer Anton Corbijn, musician Genesis P. Orridge, journalist Paul Morley and Buzzcock Pete Shelley amongst others the film is a vital piece of music documentary making.
This rare screening will be followed by a Q&A session hosted by Travis Elborough with the films writer Jon Savage.
