Taking on a nearly wordless role that Lugosi walked away from in pre-production, former bit player Boris Karloff cemented his own horror legacy in bringing Frankenstein’s Monster to life.
Working with director James Whale and make-up artist Jack Pierce, Karloff created a prototypical Monster that was at once sympathetic and sinister, murderous and melancholy. The Monster’s imposing silhouette – complete with square head and neck-bolts – and ubiquitous mythology of electricity-fuelled resurrections and brain implants gone wrong began life here, not in Mary Shelley’s source novel.
