Presented on 35mm by The Celluloid Sorceress
Daryl Poynter (Michael Keaton) is a successful real estate agent, embezzler of $92,000 and cocaine addict. An investigation into Daryl’s life starts when his girlfriend dies of an overdose in his bed. Unable to leave the country Daryl, checks into a rehab centre to hide from the police behind the anonymity he is guaranteed.
A powerful drama about drug addiction and rehabilitation, Clean and Sober contains some of its impressive cast’s finest work. Morgan Freeman is Craig, Daryl’s guidance counsellor, M. Emmet Walsh is Richard, recovering addict and Daryl’s sponsor and Kathy Baker is Charlie, a fellow addict in an abusive relationship who Daryl becomes attached to.
Michael Keaton, known then strictly for comedies, was awarded the 1988 Best Actor prize by the National Society of Film Critics jointly for his work in Clean and Sober and Beetlejuice as a testament to an acting range that would not be fully appreciated for many years.
Clean and Sober only received a small cinema release in the UK a year after the success of Batman. The “full frame” VHS and DVD releases are long out of print.
The Celluloid Sorceress is thrilled to present Michael Keaton’s (joint) finest early performance from 35mm. Introduced by Rebecca Nicole Williams with a selection of vintage 35mm trailers before the feature.
