Set during 1979 in Germany, Balloon recounts the astonishing true story of two families attempting to leave the GDR for west Germany . Desperate to flee, the Strelzyk and Wetzel families work together to create a homemade hot-air balloon to cross the inner German border. On the night of their planned escape The Wetzel’s fear the balloon incapable of performing the journey due to the weather, jumping from the escape attempt early they soon realise they were mere metres from the border and freedom.


The following morning the local Stasi scour the crash site for evidence in order to track down the defectors.  With paranoia setting in with both families in fear of capture race against time to escape.  A daring true story bought the screen by German director Michael Herbig.
