The controversy over Alfonso Cuaron’s feature Roma, which was rejected by Cannes because of its funding from Netflix but went on to win numerous awards and had a cinema release in several countries, prompts our topical Public Debate on the theme ‘AT THE FLICKS–OR NETFLIX?’
In the historic Regent Street Cinema we invite a panel of distinguished professional film-makers, directors, producers, actors, critics and cinema-programmers from Europe and Turkey to discuss the state of film-making and film viewing today. Comparing and contrasting the big and small screen experiences but also finding the positive aspects of streaming services that fund films which the major studios would not finance and make available foreign language features and TV series that audiences overseas could not otherwise see.
The discussion will be moderated by Phillip Bergson of the UK Critics’ Cırcle who is a BBC broadcaster and script-writer.
