Arena spends the summer with super-cool self-confessed rock chick, Chrissie Hynde – shopping for clothes in Paris, shooting the breeze on Sandra Bernhard’s radio show, hanging out with her at home in London and a special trip to her home town in Ohio. Arena: Alone with Chrissie Hynde is a thoughtful and intimate portrait of a “lone, hungry, irritable wolf”.
A glorious live performance at a tiny London venue showcases Chrissie’s charismatic stage presence and punctuates the film. She also joins her mates in a North London pub to sing a rip-roaring version of The Pretenders’ rockabilly classic, Thumbelina.
Perhaps most revealing are Chrissie’s interactions with the people she comes across. The gent’s outfitter in Paris who tells her she’s going to have to watch what she eats as she laughs and strains to zip up the trousers she’s trying on; her reaction to an opinionated street artist who paints her portrait in a Parisian tourist trap; walking arm in arm with her friend Sandra Bernhard on the streets of New York or dancing with record producer and Black Key’s frontman Dan Auerbach in his recording studio in Nashville. This is Chrissie at her most relaxed.
We also go back to where it all began: Akron, Ohio. Chrissie takes us on a tour of the highways and backstreets of her hometown. She shows us the cemetery where she hung out as a teenager, the house where she grew up, the woods she used to get lost in and the mall where she worked as a waitress.
We all want to hang with our favourite rock stars: here’s your chance to enjoy some alone time with Chrissie Hynde.
