This story of nuclear apocalypse tells of a retired, elderly couple living in rural England, who hear that a Third World War is imminent between the US and the Soviets. Though they survive a nuclear blast, they fail to realise the effects of radiation. It was David Bowie that director Jimmy T. Murakami originally had in mind to score his animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs' 1982 novel, When the Wind Blows. Bowie had previously worked on Snowman, but his involvement was limited by prior commitments, so he only provided the title track. Instead, he turned to Roger Waters. Along with his new group, The Bleeding Heart Band, Waters wrote the songs Towers of Faith and Folded Flags, along with extended instrumental passages.
