The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) + Live Organ

Join us to celebrate this 1920 silent classic. As a special Halloween treat, the film will be accompanied by live music courtesy of maestro Donald Mackenzie, performed on a genuine Compton cinema organ—one of the few surviving original working cinema pipe organs in the country. The screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will deliver 58 minutes of gripping expressionist cinema, showcasing the organ’s dramatic and eerie potential. This event is part of the Organ+ Festival, a series of events taking place in and around the University of Westminster. Featuring an accessible program that explores the organ in dialogue with other elements—whether instruments, voice, words, or films—these concerts celebrate this evocative and powerful instrument. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) is a landmark of German Expressionist cinema, directed by Robert Wiene. The film tells the unsettling tale of the sinister Dr. Caligari, who uses a sleepwalker, Cesare, to commit murders in a small German town. Renowned for its twisted, nightmarish set design, distorted perspectives, and psychologically charged narrative, the film has been hailed as the first true horror masterpiece, influencing generations of filmmakers and shaping the visual language of the genre.PT58MU2025-10-30
