Join us at Regent Street Cinema for a special screening of Searching for Satyrus, followed by an exclusive live Q&A with director Rena Effendi, hosted by Dr Blanca Huertas.
Set against the stark and haunting landscapes of the Caucasus, Searching for Satyrus is both a personal and political journey. Acclaimed photographer Rena Effendi embarks on a deeply intimate quest to find the elusive and endangered Satyrus effendi butterfly -named after her late father, a Soviet entomologist whose life and legacy remain shrouded in distance and mystery.
Traversing militarised borderlands between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Effendi retraces her father’s footsteps through territories shaped by conflict, memory, and loss. As the search unfolds, the film becomes a meditation on absence, inheritance, and the fragile intersections between nature and human history.
This special event offers audiences a rare opportunity to go beyond the film, with a post-screening conversation exploring the ecological, political, and emotional layers of the story. Hosted by Dr Blanca Huertas -one of the world’s leading experts in butterfly biodiversity -the discussion will bring unique scientific and cultural insight into the film’s central subject.
A powerful and visually arresting documentary, Searching for Satyrus is an unmissable cinematic experience that bridges art, science, and geopolitics.DocumentaryPT1H41MTBC PG
