SPEAKERS:
Dominic Lutyens is a freelance arts journalist, who writes for BBC Culture, House & Garden and other titles. He is the co-author with Kirsty Hislop of the book, 70s Style & Design. He also wrote, Celia Birtwell, the textile designer’s biography, with her. His latest book Perriand, a monograph on architect and designer Charlotte Perriand, was published last year.
Virginia Bates’ early childhood was spent at Pinewood Studios where her mother was a make-up artist. At the age of 8, the family moved to Mauritius but after a few years she was sent back to England to attend boarding school. Ironically in the 70’s, the mediaeval mansion was bought by Hammer Films!
After attending drama school she started a theatre company “The Other Eye” based in Notting Hill Gate. TV and films followed. Notably Dr Who, Troubleshooters, Alfie, Curse of The Crimson Altar (with Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee), Demons of the Mind, Dracula, and A Clockwork Orange.
Later, she rented an empty shop for a fortnight… and ended up staying for 43 years, specialising in antique clothes. The magical store soon became a mecca for A-listers, including John Galliano, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Donatella Versace,Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss… the list goes on! However, still hanging onto her Equity card, Virginia has just finished filming Forever Sucks, playing a Vampire!

MOVIE SYNOPSIS:
This gothic cinema gem is based on the legend of Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian countess who killed young women in the 16th and 17th centuries. Transposed to the 1970s, in an empty seaside hotel in Belgium during the winter, a young newlywed couple meet a lesbian countess and her apparent secretary, both shrouded in an air of mystery. The newlywed’s plans for a quiet elopement are hijacked by the high glamour and dark influence of their fellow guests.PT1H36M182025-10-14
